Path layers

A path layer displays the shortest path between two or more nodes.

The first step is to select the nodes between which a path is calculated. Click the Properties button on the Plot Toolbar and select the Path tab. Paths are calculated between a set of From Nodes and To Nodes, where each set of nodes is determined by entering a node expression. In this example, a shortest path will be calculated and displayed between node 6650 and 5550. As the From and To node expressions can, in theory, display all node pairs, you are given the option of limiting the number of paths that will actually be calculated. To see how many paths could be calculated, click the Count Paths button.

You may choose to display all of the nodes along the path, none of these nodes, or just the From and To nodes. You may also define a subset of links which are to be used in the path calculations by entering a link filter expression.

After determining the path nodes, you must define the path costs. Select the Cost tab and then enter an expression for the link costs and (optionally) for the turn costs. In this example, the auto time and turn times are used to calculate the shortest path between the two nodes. You may also choose to vary the width of the path cost by entering a scale factor that is greater than zero. If you check the Display total path value setting, then the value that is used for scaling and display is the total cost between the From and To nodes. If this setting is not checked, then the cost used for scaling increments starting at the From node.

You may also choose to color the paths depending on the path costs.
